Cruise-Mo Quiz #3: Prioritizing Equipment

This quiz is at the beginning of THS Cruising Series ebooklet #3: "Messing About With Boats, Part 2: Equipment, The Macro View"

Want to find out more about the THS Cruising Series?

As with all the Cruise-Mo quizzes, I recommend that you print out two copies of this page, and that you and your partner fill out answers for each statement independently. I suggest that you then sit down together and compare answers. Are there no differences? A few differences? A lot? This and the quizzes in my other ebooklets will not only help you clarify your own views on aspects of cruising—they can also reflect differences between your ideas and expectations and those of your partner. Failure to accommodate those differences can spell failure for your cruising plans.

Here is a list of 50 items that figure into the fitting out equation. It is by no means an exhaustive list, but it does cover many of the key items that people consider when getting the boat ready to cruise. Each item on the list is discussed in the ebooklet.

You may think I'm crazy to include some of the items on the list: of COURSE a boat needs an anchor, right? In cases like that, there's a second level of prioritization that is needed (in the case of anchors, what type? how many? how big?) that I go into in the ebooklet.

For each item on the list below, mark its priority given your cruising plans.

I would be very surprised if your answers exactly match mine, and that's okay. The difference will most likely be between the "definitely" and "it depends" categories. Your priorities will depend on many things, like your cruising itinerary, the amenities you include that require electricity, and the type of weather you expect to be in most of the time. Therefore, some of the things I've hedged on by putting under the "it depends" column may be definite needs for your boat.

The reasons behind my answers are detailed in my ebooklet. Again, understanding my reasons won't necessarily change your mind, but it may give you some food for thought that will help you plan your own fitting out process.
