A novice cruising yachtsman, fired with the spirit of a sailing adventure, takes his family from England on a yacht through the inland river canals of France, to the Mediterranean Sea and Barcelona of Spain. Along the way he has to deal with fog, menacing ships and trees, cranky swans, the vagaries of tides and fast flowing currents, mutinous and "incompetent" crew, endless locks, a sinking boat and other unexpected threats. But there are wonderful compensations too, such as the French countryside, ancient towns and the continuing change of life as it slowly passes by the boat as they travel on. This is a funny, light-hearted story, which James recounts with a dry wit and taking a somewhat deprecating view of himself as the ships master.
Features: map showing the route taken by the Silver Vixen descriptive passages of ancient cities and ruins dating back to Roman times special little gems of exceptional humour liberally sprinkled throughout, that will force you to stop reading until you can collect yourself.

My use of the French language was not up to following his hysterical recriminations, but I could tell he wasn’t happy. I made a mental note to try to learn more French slang and four-letter words. |
| I nodded my head wisely when he pointed out some little feature like the water filter attached to the engine, which he said had to be cleaned now and again. I even asked some intelligent questions like how do you start the motor? |
